Weddings On A Budget: Part 1

A wedding doesn’t have to cost $30k!

Weddings are back!

I don’t know about you, but we have several weddings we will be attending in the next few months. The day can be a wonderful time of celebration for the happy couple and the start of their great adventure…but is it worth going into debt over?

The average price tag for a wedding is creeping north of $30,000 these days. I can’t say I thought much about the cost of a wedding until I was planning my own two years ago.

And if you know me even a little, I’m sure you can guess that there was no way in heck I was going to spend that much money on my wedding day!!

I was never one of those little girls growing up who dreamed of a magical wedding day and feeling like a princess. (If you were, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!) But for me, I couldn’t fathom spending the equivalent of a house down payment on a single day.

So, if you feel a little sick when you hear that cost, it’s ok! Just know, it doesn’t have to cost that much!

There are those out there who will try to make you believe you need to spend twice the money on the most gorgeous linen napkins, but in the end, it’s your day. Make it whatever you want. If you aren’t going to care whether you had linen napkins at your wedding by the time your first anniversary rolls around, then don’t feel obligated to spend the extra money on them!

Plus, it is entirely possible to have a beautiful wedding on a budget.

Start by talking to your partner and making a list of the things that are the most important for you both to have on your day. Ours included a venue with an outdoor option and keeping the wedding party to just our two siblings.

Then, list out anything you definitely don’t want. Remember, this day is about you and your partner! For us this included a full sit down, plated meal, and excessive flowers and centerpieces. (All items that can also have a high-ticket price tag too! Not only that, but they also just weren’t that important for us.)

Finally, add anything that would be nice to have if the budget allows. Perhaps printed and mailed save the date versus emailed ones.

Taking some time to decide what are the most important things for each of you to have for the day will help direct where to spend your money. (Pro tip – this is true for any budget, not just your wedding one!) Once you know these things, you can set you budget and start allocating from there!
