Money versus Math
When I tell people I love budgeting, most of them look at me like I have two heads.
Like budgeting? Much less love budgeting? Not two words most people put in the same sentence.
But that’s me!
It wasn’t always that way, though.
I remember crying over math homework in middle school. In high school, I my mom told me I likely wouldn’t need anything beyond basic algebra for most careers. Once I got to college, I took one math class my first semester, freshman year (Math for the Liberal Arts major, no less!) and figured I’d never had to deal with it again.
Yet here I am, working in the financial world, helping other people with their money. (And loving it!)
Money is so different from the math you learn in school though. (It’s probably because none of this is taught in school!)
The good news is that the only math you really need for your finances is basic addition and subtraction! (Turns out my mom was right!)
The bad news is that money goes so much deeper for most people than just talking about numbers. It likely brings up things that people would rather not deal with.
It can bring up a plethora of emotions – anxiety, scarcity, anger, excitement, shame, joy, intimidation – to name a few.
Talking about money is very taboo in our society. You might know everything about your best friend’s dating life, but talk about how much money you each make? No way!
Fighting about a certain expense with your spouse might bring back memories of your parents fighting about money.
So, why would you potentially want to dig up all these things when you could just live your life in blissful ignorance?
Because, if you are ready and willing to put in the work, this will be a time of deep inner reflection that may change the course of your life.
This is just the beginning of the journey towards what I like to call Financial Exuberance.
And a journey it will be!
Are you ready?
