Weddings On A Budget: Part 2

How much should I spend on a wedding gift?

Heading 4, italics

What is an appropriate amount to spend on a wedding gift?

For me, I believe the answer is whatever is right for you and your budget at the time.

I’m sure some wedding and etiquette experts would disagree with me, but is it worth putting strain on your budget if you really can’t afford a $200 gift right now?

No!

Would that $200 put you deeper into debt? Would it be better to just give $25?

Don’t feel like you are being cheap – you are being true to your budget and what makes you comfortable for your financial situation today.

When my husband and I got married a couple years ago, we received gifts ranging from $25 to $1,000.

It truly is the thought that counts. We didn’t think less of anyone who gave us $25. Some of those guests came from halfway across the country to attend our wedding!

That’s another thing you need to consider – are you traveling from out of town to attend the wedding? That can cost more than a gift might!

We recently came home from a wedding in Pittsburgh and the weekend trip cost us around $175 for gas, turnpike tolls (thanks PA!), and a hotel for the night.

Could we have just given the bride and groom $200 and not attended the wedding?

Sure.

But we wanted to be a part of their day. We were also able to see other family and get out of town for a night.

You will hear me say this time and time again,
but where you spend your money should be based on your priorities.

So, we chose to divide that amount between the costs to attend the wedding and the gift we gave to the couple.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you shouldn’t ever attend a wedding or give a nice gift!

But you don’t have to feel like you need to spend a lot if you are trying to get your finances under control.

It’s your money, your budget. And you get to decide where that money goes.
