Do you know how many subscription services you are currently paying for?

It seems that everyone has a ‘plus’ version of their platform these days. And while that can be a great way to cut down on the cost of cable, if you start piling on the subscriptions, you might still be paying hundreds of dollars a month…or more!

When I first have clients write down all of their monthly expenses, it’s not uncommon for them to find something they are paying for that they no longer use (hello gym membership, I’m looking at you) or something that is getting billed to you through your cell phone that you don’t even know what it is for! (Maybe an app or game or even something one of your kids is buying.)

It’s possible you’ve forgotten about a subscription you got a great deal on 12 months ago. Now they are charging you full price! Is that service still worth it? Especially if you are already paying for one or two similar services?

If you are trying to get a handle on your expenses, a great way to start is to write out everything that you pay for on a recurring basis each month. Then run that entire list under a microscope to decide if each expense is still worthy of your hard-earned dollars.

Or pull out your most recent bank or credit card statement and see if you know what each transaction is for. If you don’t, do a little digging and find out! It could be one of those pesky subscriptions that you’ve forgotten about.

I tell my clients this all the time, there are no right or wrong answers to these questions. Your budget is YOUR budget and I’m not here to tell you what you should or shouldn’t spend your money on. I just want to make sure that you know where your money goes each month and that those places align with your priorities.

Budgeting is all about making CONSCIOUS money decisions! The first step to that is to know where your money is going each month!
