You know I love YNAB, right? (Are you on the YNAB train yet?? What are you waiting for??)

Here are the top mistakes I see people making when it comes to their budget.

Not checking their budget before spending - what good is it to have a budget if you never look at it? YNAB is meant to be used on a regular basis so you know exactly how much you have set aside for any particular category. So download the app and pull it out before you make a purchase!

Using YNAB only as a tracking system - this builds on the first mistake. If you aren’t checking your budget before you spend, you are just tracking what has already happened. What’s in the past is in the past! The beauty of YNAB is that you can see, in real time, where you stand. Having the confidence that you have money already budgeted for a purchase is a wonderful feeling. Try it, I dare ya.

Not allowing for flexibility - thinking of budgeting as something that is restrictive, that you set once a month and then don’t look at for another 30 days is an old way of thinking. With YNAB, you have the flexibility to change your budget as your priorities change or as you get new information. If you are planning to have lunch in the park tomorrow and it is pouring rain, you’re probably going to change your plans, right? The same goes for your budget. If you were planning to only spend a certain amount on groceries this month but then your family gets sick and you need a few extra items, give yourself the grace to move a few dollars to your grocery category to make up for it. Life happens! Your budget is allowed to change accordingly!

Do any of these hit home with you? Are you using YNAB to the best of its ability?

When you do get in the habit of using the system as it is designed, it can be a total game changer for your finances. I’ve seen it happen!! (Yes, even to those who felt just like you do right now!)

Get on over to YNAB and start your free trial today. Or if you’re a current user and need some help, I’m here anytime. Let’s chat and get you moving forward!
